P0219 – Engine Over Speed Condition (OBD2)

P0219 means "Engine Over Speed Condition". These codes mean the control unit has detected a dangerous condition – engine, oil or transmission overheating, or engine or vehicle speed beyond the allowed limit.

What overheating and overspeed codes mean

P0217 (engine over-temperature), P0298 (engine oil over-temperature) and P0218 (transmission over-temperature) are stored when the measured temperature has exceeded the safe limit. The control unit usually reduces power, switches off the air conditioning and turns on warning lights to protect the engine or gearbox.

P0219 (engine overspeed) and P0297 (vehicle overspeed) are stored when the engine revs or vehicle speed went above the programmed limit – for example after a wrong downshift on a manual gearbox, a slipping clutch or a runaway diesel.

These are not sensor faults but records of a real event (or of a faulty sensor reporting one). After an overheating event, check for engine damage such as a failed head gasket before continuing to drive.

On VAG vehicles (VW, Audi, Škoda, Seat, Cupra), VCDS and older VAG testers can show this code as the five-digit VAG code 16603 (P0219). Both numbers mean the same fault.

Symptoms of P0219

  • Red temperature warning, steam or coolant smell
  • Reduced power, A/C switched off
  • Gearbox warning, harsh shifts (transmission overheating)
  • Engine noise after an over-rev
  • Check Engine light on

Mechanic's Pro Tip

After an overheating event, check the oil for a milky colour and the coolant for oil or bubbles. Catching a head gasket problem early is much cheaper than a warped cylinder head.

  1. 1.Low coolant or coolant leak (overheating)

    Most likely
  2. 2.Cooling fan, thermostat or water pump failure

  3. 3.Blocked radiator or transmission cooler

  4. 4.Wrong downshift or clutch slip (overspeed)

  5. 5.Faulty temperature or speed sensor reporting a false value

Step-by-step diagnostic guide

  1. 1

    Read codes and freeze-frame data

Read all codes and look at the freeze-frame data: temperature, engine speed and vehicle speed at the time of the event.

  2. 2

    Check the cooling system

With the engine cold, check coolant level, leaks, fan operation, thermostat and water pump.

  3. 3

    Verify the sensor

Compare the temperature reading with an infrared thermometer to make sure it is real.

  4. 4

    Check for damage

After real overheating, do a cooling system pressure test and a combustion gas (CO₂) test for a head gasket leak.

Multimeter: Cooling system pressure test: system must hold its cap pressure (often about 1.0–1.5 bar) without dropping.

  5. 5

    Repair and verify

Fix the cause, refill and bleed the cooling system or check the gearbox fluid, then clear codes and test under load.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep driving with P0219?

No, not while the condition exists. If the engine or gearbox overheats, stop safely and switch off. After an overspeed event, have the engine checked for damage.

How much does it cost to fix P0219?

Typical repair costs are 0 € – 3000 €, depending on the cause and the vehicle. The most common fixes are: low coolant or coolant leak (overheating); cooling fan, thermostat or water pump failure; blocked radiator or transmission cooler. Always confirm the cause with the tests above before buying parts.

Can I clear an overheating code and keep driving?

Only after the cause has been found and fixed. Driving an overheating engine can destroy the head gasket or warp the cylinder head.

What causes engine overspeed codes?

Usually a missed gear on a manual gearbox, a slipping clutch or, on diesels, the engine running on its own oil (runaway).

What is the difference between P0219 and similar codes?

P0219 belongs to a group of codes for the same component that differ in the type or location of the fault: P0217 – Engine Overtemp Condition; P0218 – Transmission Over Temperature Condition; P0297 – Vehicle Overspeed Condition; P0298 – Engine Oil Over Temperature. The tests on this page apply to the whole group; the type of fault tells you where to start.
