P0509 – Idle Air Control System Circuit High (OBD2)

P0509 means "Idle Air Control System Circuit High". The voltage in the idle air control system circuit is above the permitted maximum. For most sensors this points to an open signal or ground wire – the signal "floats" up to the reference voltage – or to a short to voltage.

How idle speed control works

The idle control system keeps the engine running at a stable speed when you are not pressing the accelerator; these codes mean the idle speed is wrong or the idle air control valve has a fault.

On older engines a separate idle air control (IAC) valve lets a controlled amount of air bypass the closed throttle. On modern drive-by-wire engines the electronic throttle body itself opens slightly to control idle. In both cases the engine control unit sets a target idle speed – higher when cold or when the air conditioning is on – and adjusts the air flow to reach it.

Codes report that the idle speed is lower or higher than expected (P0506, P0507), that the system cannot control idle (P0505, P0519) or that the IAC valve circuit is faulty (P0508, P0509, P0511, P0518).

Carbon build-up in the throttle body or IAC valve is by far the most common cause. Vacuum leaks raise the idle; a dirty throttle or a blocked IAC passage lowers it. After cleaning, many engines need an idle or throttle adaptation.

On VAG vehicles (VW, Audi, Škoda, Seat, Cupra), VCDS and older VAG testers can show this code as the five-digit VAG code 16893 (P0509). Both numbers mean the same fault.

Symptoms of P0509

  • Idle too high, too low or hunting up and down
  • Stalling when stopping or when the A/C switches on
  • Rough idle
  • Check Engine light on
  • High idle after a cold start that does not come down

Mechanic's Pro Tip

If the idle is fine with the A/C off but drops and the engine stalls with the A/C on, check the A/C pressure sensor and the throttle body cleanliness – the control unit must know about the extra load in advance to raise the idle.

  1. 1.Open circuit in the signal or ground wire

    Most likely

A loose ground connection is a very common cause.

  2. 2.Signal wire shorted to the 5 V reference or battery voltage

  3. 3.Faulty idle air control system

  4. 4.Dirty throttle body or IAC valve

Carbon deposits restrict the air flow at idle.

  5. 5.Vacuum leak

Raises the idle speed and can set P0507.

  6. 6.Idle/throttle adaptation not done after cleaning or battery disconnection

  7. 7.Wiring or connector fault

Step-by-step diagnostic guide

  1. 1

    Read codes and idle data

Read all codes and compare target and actual idle speed and the idle air correction in live data.

  2. 2

    Check signal and ground

With the ignition on and the idle air control system plugged in, back-probe the signal and ground wires. A signal stuck at reference or battery voltage points to an open ground/signal wire or a short to voltage.

Multimeter: Ground wire to battery negative: below about 0.1 V. Signal stuck at about 5 V (or 12 V) = open or short to voltage.

  3. 3

    Check for vacuum leaks

Listen for hissing and smoke-test the intake if the idle is too high.

  4. 4

Clean the throttle body or IAC valve

Clean carbon from the throttle valve and the IAC passage with throttle body cleaner (ignition off).

  5. 5

    Test the IAC valve

Measure the IAC valve resistance and command it with the scan tool.

Multimeter: IAC valve resistance depends on the type – typically between about 6 and 50 Ω; compare with the specification.

  6. 6

    Run the idle/throttle adaptation

Run the throttle or idle adaptation with the scan tool after cleaning, then check idle stability with all consumers on.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep driving with P0509?

Yes. If the engine stalls at junctions, drive carefully and get it fixed soon – stalling also means losing power steering assistance on some cars.

How much does it cost to fix P0509?

Typical repair costs are 0 € – 400 €, depending on the cause and the vehicle. The most common fixes are: open circuit in the signal or ground wire; signal wire shorted to the 5 V reference or battery voltage; faulty idle air control system. Always confirm the cause with the tests above before buying parts.

Can a dirty throttle body cause idle problems?

Yes, it is the most common cause. Clean it and run the throttle adaptation afterwards.

Why is my idle high after a battery change?

The control unit lost its learned idle values. Many cars relearn after a few drives; others need an idle adaptation with a scan tool.

What is the difference between P0509 and similar codes?

P0509 belongs to a group of codes for the same component that differ in the type or location of the fault: P0506 – Idle Control System RPM lower Than Expected; P0507 – Idle Control System RPM higher Than Expected; P0508 – Idle Air Control System Circuit Low; P0511 – Idle Air Control Circuit; P0518 – Idle Air Control Circuit Intermittent; P0519 – Idle Air Control Circuit System Performance. The tests on this page apply to the whole group; the type of fault tells you where to start.
