P0854 – Drive Switch Input Circuit Low (OBD2)
P0854 means "Drive Switch Input Circuit Low". The voltage the control unit measures in the transmission range sensor (selector position) circuit is below the permitted minimum. For a sensor this usually means the signal wire is shorted to ground or the reference voltage is missing; for an actuator, that its control wire is shorted to ground.

How the transmission range sensor works
The transmission range sensor tells the control units which position the gear selector is in (P, R, N, D and manual positions); these codes cover the sensor and related selector switches.
The range sensor (also called selector switch, multifunction switch or PRNDL switch) is mounted on the gearbox selector shaft or inside the gearbox. It reports the selected position to the transmission and engine control units, enables starting only in P or N and switches on the reversing lights.
Codes cover the sensor circuit, range/performance, low/high/intermittent signals, park/neutral and drive switch inputs, the range display circuit and correlation with the up/down shift switches.
A faulty range sensor can prevent the engine from starting, cause the wrong gear to be selected, disable the reversing lights or put the gearbox into limp mode. Adjustment, wear and water ingress are common causes.
On VAG vehicles (VW, Audi, Škoda, Seat, Cupra), VCDS and older VAG testers can show this code as the five-digit VAG code 17238 (P0854). Both numbers mean the same fault.
Symptoms of P0854
- Engine does not start in P or N, or starts in gear
- Wrong gear displayed or no display
- Reversing lights not working
- Harsh engagement or limp mode
- Check Engine or gearbox warning light

Mechanic's Pro Tip
If the car will only start when you wiggle the selector lever in Park, the range sensor is misadjusted or worn – a common and cheap fix compared with gearbox work.
1.Signal or control wire shorted to ground
Most likelyLook for chafed insulation where the harness touches the engine, exhaust brackets or body edges.
2.Missing 5 V reference or supply voltage
An open reference wire or a shorted sensor elsewhere on the same reference circuit can pull it down.
3.Internal short in the transmission range sensor (selector position)
4.Worn or misadjusted range sensor
5.Water or dirt in the sensor (external sensors)
6.Wiring or connector fault
7.Selector cable out of adjustment
Step-by-step diagnostic guide
- 1
Read codes and range position
Read the transmission codes and watch the selector position in live data while moving through all positions.
- 2
Measure the signal voltage
With the ignition on and the transmission range sensor (selector position) plugged in, back-probe the signal wire. Then unplug it and check the reference/supply and ground wires separately.
Multimeter: Signal near 0 V = short to ground or no reference. Reference wire: about 5 V with ignition on. Signal wire to ground with connector unplugged: no continuity.
- 3
Check selector cable adjustment
Check that the selector cable moves the lever on the gearbox fully into each detent.
- 4
Inspect the sensor and connector
Check the sensor for water, corrosion and damage.
- 5
Measure the sensor
Check the switch contacts or signals for each position against the wiring diagram.
- 6
Adjust or replace
Adjust or replace the sensor and run any required adaptation.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep driving with P0854?
Carefully. The car may not start, may engage the wrong gear or not show the correct position – make sure the car is really in Park when leaving it.
How much does it cost to fix P0854?
Typical repair costs are 30 € – 600 €, depending on the cause and the vehicle. The most common fixes are: signal or control wire shorted to ground; missing 5 V reference or supply voltage; internal short in the transmission range sensor (selector position). Always confirm the cause with the tests above before buying parts.
Can a range sensor stop the car from starting?
Yes. The engine is only allowed to crank in Park or Neutral; if the sensor does not report those positions, it will not start.
Is the range sensor inside the gearbox?
On some gearboxes it is external on the selector shaft, on others inside the gearbox or part of the mechatronic unit.
What is the difference between P0854 and similar codes?
P0854 belongs to a group of codes for the same component that differ in the type or location of the fault: P0819 – Up and Down Shift Switch to Transmission Range Correlation; P0850 – Park / Neutral Switch Input Circuit; P0851 – Park / Neutral Switch Input Circuit Low; P0852 – Park / Neutral Switch Input Circuit High; P0853 – Drive Switch Input Circuit; P0855 – Drive Switch Input Circuit High. The tests on this page apply to the whole group; the type of fault tells you where to start.
