P2510 – ECM/PCM Power Relay Sense Circuit Range/Performance (OBD2)

P2510 means "ECM/PCM Power Relay Sense Circuit Range/Performance". The engine control unit power relay signal is electrically present but implausible: it does not match what the control unit expects for the current operating conditions or from other sensors. This is a performance fault, not a broken wire.

How the control unit power relay works

The main power relay supplies the engine control unit and many engine components; these codes mean its control or sense circuit is faulty.

When the ignition is switched on, the engine control unit energises its main relay, which supplies power to the control unit itself and to components such as injectors, sensors and valves. After switch-off, the control unit keeps the relay on for a short time to store data and run fans or pumps, then releases it.

Codes P0685–P0690 report that the relay control circuit is open, low or high, or that the sensed relay output is wrong. A failing relay can cause no-start, stalling or a battery drain if it does not switch off.

Causes include worn relay contacts, corroded fuse boxes, broken wires and poor grounds.

Symptoms of P2510

  • Engine does not start or stalls
  • Intermittent loss of power to sensors and injectors
  • Battery drain (relay not switching off)
  • Many sensor codes at once
  • Check Engine light on

Mechanic's Pro Tip

If the engine stalls and restarts at random and several sensor codes appear together, tap the main relay while the engine runs – a stall or stumble confirms a worn relay.

  1. 1.Engine control unit power relay worn, contaminated or out of calibration

    Most likely

The signal drifts slowly, so it is still within the electrical limits but wrong.

  2. 2.Mechanical problem in the system the engine control unit power relay measures or controls

For example a leak, a sticking part or a restriction that really changes the measured value.

  3. 3.High resistance in a connector or ground

Corrosion causes a voltage drop that shifts the reading.

  4. 4.Worn or failed main relay

  5. 5.Corroded fuse box or relay socket

  6. 6.Wiring fault in the control or sense circuit

  7. 7.Poor ground connection

Step-by-step diagnostic guide

  1. 1

    Read codes

Read all codes; many component codes at once often point to the shared power relay.

  2. 2

Compare live data with expected values

Read the engine control unit power relay values in live data and compare them with related readings (engine speed, load, temperature or pressure) and with the specification. A value that is electrically fine but wrong for the conditions confirms a performance fault – then check the mechanical side before replacing the part.

  3. 3

    Swap or test the relay

Swap the relay with an identical one or bench-test it.

  4. 4

    Check the relay socket

Inspect the socket and fuse box for corrosion or heat damage.

  5. 5

    Measure the circuits

Check the relay coil control from the control unit and the voltage on the relay output.

Multimeter: Relay output: battery voltage with the ignition on; it should drop to 0 V a short time after switch-off.

  6. 6

    Repair and verify

Replace the relay or repair wiring and verify that it switches off after the engine is stopped.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep driving with P2510?

Not recommended. A failing main relay can make the engine stall without warning or stop it from starting.

How much does it cost to fix P2510?

Typical repair costs are 10 € – 300 €, depending on the cause and the vehicle. The most common fixes are: engine control unit power relay worn, contaminated or out of calibration; mechanical problem in the system the engine control unit power relay measures or controls; high resistance in a connector or ground. Always confirm the cause with the tests above before buying parts.

Can a relay cause a no-start?

Yes. Without the main relay, the control unit and injectors have no power.

Why does the relay stay on after switch-off?

The control unit keeps it on briefly to save data. If it stays on longer, the battery drains – check the relay and control signal.

What is the difference between P2510 and similar codes?

P2510 belongs to a group of codes for the same component that differ in the type or location of the fault: P0689 – ECM/PCM Power Relay Sense Circuit Low; P0690 – ECM/PCM Power Relay Sense Circuit High; P2505 – ECM/PCM Power Input Signal; P2507 – ECM/PCM Power Input Signal Low; P2508 – ECM/PCM Power Input Signal High; P2509 – ECM/PCM Power Input Signal Intermittent. The tests on this page apply to the whole group; the type of fault tells you where to start.
